Monastery of Jerónimos is UNESCO World Heritage since 1983 and National Monument. A masterpiece of 16th-century architecture. It is located in one of Lisbon’s most noble areas, both historical and monumental settings overlooking the Tagus River in Belém civil parish.
The monastery has a façade of three hundred meters. Stands the Church’s richly decorated South Portal boasting images of Portugal’s Patron Saint, St. Michael the Archangel (on top), and Our Lady of Belém or Our Lady of Reis (at the center).
Founded by King D. Manuel I at the beginning of the 16th century it was donated later to monks, who stayed in the monastery till the 19th century. You will find several religious, regal, and nautical elements in the stones. At the present, the Monastery of Jerónimos still preserves his structures, which contributed to his recognition.
It is possible to visit the main church and the cloisters on separate tours. In 1880, the bones of Vasco da Gama and the poet Luís de Camões were transferred to the Jerónimos Monastery. Its tombs, by the sculptor Costa Mota (uncle), are found in the sub-choir of the church. Vasco da Gama (on the north side) and Luís de Camões (on the south side) were the two maximum representatives of the Portuguese epic, who deserved the honor of resting beside kings. A place to visit in Lisbon.
Parking: Available for cars and buses in the public car park in front of the monument, with ample capacity.
Accessibility: Accessibility for people with reduced mobility in the Church and the Lower Cloister. Tactile route for the blind.
Nearby you will be able to taste Pastéis de Belém, which are delicious. Difficult is to eat just one, believe us. Also possible to visit the National Coach Museum.
