Sandeman started in 1790 when the young man George Sandeman with 25 years old requested 300 £ from his father to set up as a wine merchant in London. Gained reputation and sales growth day after day. His main focus was on Port and Sherry wine.
Later in 1811, George Sandeman traveled to Spain and Portugal, where met locals, habits, local food of each country. He decided to acquire lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia that would be able to storage Port wines before shipment to other destinations. By 1825 the company trade to several countries on almost all Continents. One decade later Sandeman Port shipment amounted to 4580 pipes.
Douro and Porto, become even more known, due to the Port Wine Cellars.
During years Sandeman’s growth activity besides the owner changes from family to the public, two World War´s. Many other issues such as brand trademark, brand copies, or even the first Vintage year.
Since 2002 under the ownership of Sogrape, a leading company present worldwide and founded in 1942. Sandeman has his own know-how, investments, and footprint, especially in the Douro wine region. The brand is one of the most awarded brands.
In the last decade, Sandeman entered also Enotourism with “The House of Sandeman Hostel and Suite”. In 2017 Quinta do Seixo 2017 Vintage Port was awarded the perfect score of 100 points by Wine Enthusiast (USA).
