Lisbon Jewish Museum to be built in Belém

Lisbon Jewish Museum to be built in Belém and the ceremony took place on a symbolic date, which marks the second centenary of the abolition of the Court of the Inquisition, recalled the president of the Haggadah Association, Esther Mucznik. A “period of darkness”, she stressed, which will also be remembered in the museum, dedicated “above all” to the “luminous part” of the history of the Jewish people.

With an area of approximately 4,000 m2, Tikva, which means hope in Hebrew, will portray the nearly two thousand years of Judaism’s history in Portugal, aiming to preserve and disseminate Jewish memory and experience, and to value cultural differences, promoting interfaith integration.

Daniel Libeskind is the architect responsible for the development of the Jewish Museum in Lisbon. He designed the Jewish museums in Berlin, San Francisco, and Copenhagen, as well as the Holocaust memorials in the Netherlands, Canada, and the United States and the conversion of Ground Zero in New York.

The museum represents a starting point “to show ourselves more fully as a community”, and to show the world ancient history. According to the Mayor of Lisbon, the future space allows “to make a very clear political statement”: Lisbon will fight for the values ​​of the coexistence of cultures, and of mutual respect, as “a key element of a society”.

In addition to the museum, said the Mayor, the Chamber approved transforming the place where it was planned to be built, into a memorial to the Jewish people.

The memorial will be erected in Largo de São Miguel, in Alfama, close to the oldest Jewry that existed in Lisbon, in the Middle Ages.
